I love that attitude. In which case I recommend high-tech and low-tech (if you ever need it). Personally, I think hi-fi came about because fidelity was shortened to "fi" and "hi" just naturally fit visually. But I have nothing to base that on. I would never write "high-fi. " #7
The style book used by virtually all U. S. newspapers specifically prescribes high-tech. #8
I have had a couple of books on information systems edited by professionals who work for major publishers. To all of them, it's always "high-tech. "
