Located in Newport, Rhode Island, the U. S. Naval War College offers long distance education courses for military officers and federal employees. And recently, it has also started a pilot program offering courses to military spouses. "Not everybody can physically come to the Naval War College and attend in residence, " said Timothy Garrold, deputy director of the College of Distant Education (CDE). Understanding the situation of having many qualified students in Newport and a very finite number of seats available, CDE greatly expands the opportunity for people to get this education, and share the NWC experience. The College of Distant Education at the war college offers three main courses, which includes Strategy and War, Theater Security Decision Making, and Joint Maritime Operations. Upon completion of these courses you will be eligible for a diploma degree. A multitude of ways for students to complete coursework is provided at the War College, while recognizing the diversity of technical fields and global deployments of its student body.

The United States Naval Community College (USNCC) has launched an online course, giving continuing education and training to Navy enlisted personnel. The course, "Naval Leadership, " is the first of five online offerings for the school's Naval Core Certificate, which focuses on naval heritage, history, ethics, and other subjects related to naval sciences. USNCC is working with instructional design firm iDesign to build the certificate. "At a time when U. S. armed forces are facing new and global threats and ascendant challenges, military and civilian leadership have recognized the imperative of developing a more unified approach and making leadership education and training opportunities more accessible across today's Navy, " said Randi Cosentino, president of the United States Naval Community College. "This work is an important step in the modern Navy's transformation into a learning organization that constantly strives to develop our people and deploys lifelong learning to support combat operations and our peacetime mission alike. "
Candidates for admission generally must both apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination, usually from a Member of Congress. Students are officers-in-training and are referred to as midshipmen. Tuition for midshipmen is fully funded by the Navy in exchange for an active duty service obligation upon graduation. Approximately 1, 300 "plebes" (an abbreviation of the Ancient Roman word plebeian) enter the Academy each summer for the rigorous Plebe Summer, but only about 1, 000 Midshipmen graduate. Graduates are usually commissioned as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps, but a small number can also be commissioned as officers in other US services, and the services of allied nations. The United States Naval Academy has some of the highest paid graduates in the country according to starting salary. The academic program grants a bachelor of science degree with a curriculum that grades midshipmen's performance upon a broad academic program, military leadership performance, and mandatory participation in competitive athletics.
