My cousin has been trying to get me to move there because he knows H. R. really well ( geez, it seems that is the only way to get work nowadays--it isn't what you know, it's *who* you know) but in the 16 yrs I've lived in Portland, I've either been unemployed or working less than 40 hrs a week for half of that time living here--and solidly the last 5+ yrs straight now. ) I remember when I was in Wyoming ( where I grew up for 24 yrs), some folks there who were also non-LDS said that they didn't like UT because they felt "isolated" as well when they lived there. That would definitely play a factor and I think I've got too spoiled to our wet, but mild winters here ( the winter temp dipping into the 20's even is rare, and the teens is considered "severe" here where everything shuts down. ) Hmm, didn't know a lot of places in UT are closed on Sundays. I can understand why with the LDS church having such a dominance on the state, but I guess when I was growing up and we'd have to go to Salt Lake to get almost anything ( other than groceries) I don't remember that.

Seriously, we've had quite a number of complaints on this forum from non-LDS people who have chosen to live there. Approximately 85% of the county is LDS and the cultural and intellectual center of the county is Brigham Young University (BYU) which has about a 95% LDS studentbody. Many non-LDS people who move here tell us they feel isolated, that it is difficult to make friends, and complain about the fact that so many businesses are closed on Sunday. I'm LDS myself and I can tell you I would never choose to live in the Provo/Orem area because I would find it to be too socially and politically conservative for my taste. Of course, if your cousin lives there and you can "hang out" with him it might be a factor to consider too. Its probably nominally cheaper to live in Provo/Orem in terms of rents and utilities than it would be to live in the Salt Lake Area. However, I think the cost of living in both areas is relatively similar. You may want to consider living in the south part of Salt Lake County and commuting.

I got a fantastic rate, and the customer service is excellent! I have been pleased storing here for over 6 months! They sent me a Q&A sheet, and were not weird and sketchy about things like other...

I know in Louisiana I heard they don't sell clothes on Sundays ( at least that was the law 20 yrs ago LOL) but didn't know Utah had the Sunday thing going too. Yep, I knew Utah is drier than Portland--even the snow is drier too! :-)
So, my cousin I am supposed to be speaking with here soon, but I asked him to check on some storage rates around the area as I have a LOT of stuff that would have to go into storage, and it'd be relying on public transportation for awhile if I move out there ( hoping to have a car come this Dec or Jan with $ I've been saving) but I am thankful for any insights everyone has provided thus far as well as anyone who wants to provide more info from comments others have said or anything I've said here.... Thanks again! 08-12-2010, 06:46 PM

In SLC, you ca always some grocery, theater, store open on Sundays. Heck, even a few restaurents, too; but you have to look for those. I don't know about Provo/Orem but I would believe the LDS posters who say they wouldn't want to live there.
